Combine Fun With Training- 5 Games For Your Pup
A very good way to bond with your pup and have some fun is to spend time playing games with him. Playing games help the pup expend energy. A tired pup is less likely to do mischief.
Further, the games described below help in the upbringing of the pup and prepare the groundwork for advanced training.
A.Grooming
You must ensure that your pup is well groomed at all times. The best way to avoid all resistance to grooming and house cleaning is to start early. Make the pup understand that he must get used to the grooming procedures.
Groom all parts of his body and help the pup remain relaxed the whole time. Grooming will ensure the nails do not grow long and the teeth remains clean. This helps you retain dominance over the pup.
B. Hide & Seek
Your pup will have lots of fun playing this game. Further, this game will teach your pup to obey when you call him.
Make your pup sit-stay. If the pup is likely to move, have somebody hold the leash. Hide and excitedly call the pup after a few seconds. Your voice should make the pup search for you. If he succeeds, make a big fuss and reward the pup.
Make the game progressively harder until your pup learns to respond to his name even from a distance. End the game by voluntarily seeking the pup to avoid the game from being misunderstood as a compulsory ritual.
C.Find The Toy
Use this game to teach your pup to discriminate by smell. Keep your pup immobile so that he can watch you keep objects like can, bottle and box etc on the floor. Avoid touching the objects for long or use a glove.
Now hold the pup's favorite toy for a few seconds and throw it in with the other objects. He should see the whole process. Order him to fetch the toy. Every success must receive lavish praise.
This game of choosing the scented objected amongst many will help your pup give preference to your scent.
D.High Jump
The pup has to voluntarily cross the jump. Never pull your pet over the jump. Either let it walk along with you or use a treat to coax him to cross over. This game helps the pup improve mobility
E.Bar Jump
This game is the same as the high jump except for the fact that the game begins with a bar on the ground. Keep raising the bar after every successful jump.
F.Car Chasing
For reasons not completely understood by humans, dogs love to chase cars. They are not deterred by the fact that cars move at great speeds. In fact, the speed seems to spur them on.
This dangerous behavior can be restricted by negating the fun and joy which the dog gains from the chase.
One way to avoid the problem is to introduce cars to the pup at an early stage. Walk the pup on busy streets. Make it sit-stay and use the collar to ensure the dog does not move. Soon, the pup will be used to the idea of fast moving cars and will not chase them.
Once the dog acquires this habit, you will have to rectify and prevent this behavior. Ask a friend to assist you in this effort.
When the dog starts chasing, have your friend brake the car noisily to scare the dog. Ask your friend to emerge out of the car hollering at the dog. Ask your friend to lob cans filled with pebbles for maximum impact.
If the dog does not bite, ask your friend to actually chase the dog home.
Repeat this exercise with different cars and people. The whole exercise should be so scary that the dog identifies car chases with danger.
Try this exercise if your dog has the habit of chasing bikers, joggers and even horse riders.
The whole purpose of these games is to not just educate your pup but also help it have fun. A game which is not fun will not attract the attention of the dog. Hence, make sure the games are entertaining and fun.
